Apple's smart home camera reportedly won't record video

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, speaking on the new Power On podcast, says Apple’s camera will have “no video recording.” Instead, the device will use AI to analyze its surroundings and report what it detects. The unusual approach could make privacy one of the defining features of Apple’s first dedicated home camera, while also making the product fundamentally different from a conventional security camera. The device, known internally as J450, is expected to use a low-frame-rate camera alongside facial recognition and infrared sensors to identify people and pets around the home. Rather than presenting a continuous or recorded video feed, it could provide information about activity in the house and use what it sees to power automations. That could allow Apple’s Home system to recognize when someone enters or leaves a room, switch lights off when a room becomes empty, or adjust music and other settings depending on which household member is present. Bloomberg has reported that Apple is planning a much broader push into smart home hardware, beginning with its new HomePad hub, HomePod mini 2, and Apple TV 4K. The Apple Post previously reported on the J450 camera as part of Apple’s wider smart home roadmap, including its expected use of facial recognition and infrared sensing. Gurman’s latest comments clarify an important part of how the camera could work: despite having a camera sensor, the product isn’t being designed around giving customers a library of recorded footage. That would separate it from Apple’s existing HomeKit Secure Video system, which lets compatible third-party cameras securely stream and store encrypted recordings in iCloud. It could also create limitations for customers who expect a security camera to provide footage after a break-in, package theft, or other incident. How Apple’s wider security system would handle those situations remains unclear. Apple is reportedly developing a home security and monitoring service alongside the hardware, suggesting the J450 may be intended as one component of a larger system rather than a direct replacement for every traditional security camera. The camera is expected to follow Apple’s initial HomePad launch rather than arrive alongside it this month, with previous Bloomberg reporting pointing to 2027 for Apple’s broader home security push.
